Nanosatellite Will Look for Alien Worlds

Draper Laboratory and MIT have developed a satellite the size of a loaf of bread that will undertake one of the biggest tasks in astronomy: finding Earthlike planets beyond our solar system—or exoplanets—that could support life. It is scheduled to launch in 2012.

The "nanosatellite," called ExoPlanetSat, packs powerful, high-performance optics and new control and stabilization technology in a small package.

While there have been many small satellites, these are typically used to perform simple communication or observation missions. "We are doing something that has not been done before," says Séamus Tuohy, director of space systems at Draper.

ExoPlanetSat will search for planets by measuring the dimming of a star as an orbiting planet passes in front of it, a technique called transit observation. The satellite's light detector has two focal plane arrays—one for star tracking and for the transit observations. Measuring a star's dip in brightness precisely also allows the planet's size to be calculated. And by measuring the amount of time it takes the planet to complete its orbit, researchers can determine the planet's distance from its star.

This technique is well-established, but has only be used by much larger orbiting spacecrafts, including the French-operated satellite CoRot, which made a significant planet discovery last year, and NASA's Kepler satellite, which launched in 2009. ExoPlanetSat is not meant to replace larger spacecraft, but to be complementary, says Sara Seager, professor of planetary science and physics at MIT, meaning the nanosatellite will focus on individual stars that larger spacecraft have identified as being scientifically interesting. Whereas a spacecraft like Kepler looks at approximately 150,000 stars, a nanosatellite like ExoPlanetSat is designed to track a single star.

To accurately measure a star's brightness, engineers must keep the spacecraft stable—incoming photons must hit the same fraction of a pixel at all times, says Seager, who is also a participating scientist for the Kepler satellite. "Any disturbances that shake the spacecraft will blur the image and make the measurements unusable," she says. "And smaller spacecrafts are easier to push around."

To precisely control and stabilize ExoPlanetSat, Draper and MIT researchers built custom avionics and off-the-shelf reaction wheels, a type of mechanical device used for attitude control, at the base of the spacecraft to maneuver it into position. Battery-powered piezoelectric drives control the motion of the imaging detector, which is uniquely decoupled from the spacecraft, so it operates separately. (The battery will be charged by solar panels.) "The drives move the detector counter to the spacecraft so precisely the human eye cannot see the motion," says Seager. "This is an order of magnitude better than any nanosatellite has demoed before," she says.

The nanosatellite has a volume of three liters; it's 10 centimeters tall, 10 centimeters wide, and 30 centimeters long. "It was an engineering feat getting all the hardware, including the necessary processing power and data storage, into such a small package," says Tuohy.

Each nanosatellite will cost as little as $600,000 once in production—ExoPlanetSat cost approximately $5 million—and their estimated orbital lifetime is one to two years. Eventually, Seager says, the researchers hope to launch a whole fleet of nanosatellites surveying the nearest and brightest stars.

Journalist counsels Africa on GMOs by James Njoroge

Journalist Kerry Howley of the Reason magazine has written a very riveting and informative article on how fear is being used to deny Africa cutting-edge technologies. Howley writes how activists descend on Africa every time new technologies emerge. They, using apocalyptic theories, misadvise and mislead Africans into not embracing these technologies.

Africans are usually warned of cataclysmic consequences if they adopt new technologies. Usually, they're told the West wants to use them as guinea pigs, or to enslave them. Most play along, thanks to high illiteracy levels and unavailability and/or access to alternative sources of information. Always the consequences are grave: the rest of the world prospers, while Africa wallows in poverty. Essentially, Africa merely gawks as other countries industrialize.

Howley beautifully illustrates this point using the swirling debate about genetically modified (GM) foods. She writes how African countries have shunned GM foods on the advice of consumer advocacy groups such as the Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth. These groups happen to have a big presence in Africa

Except South Africa,, no other African country is currently growing genetically modified (GM) crops. We've read reports of countries like Zambia and Zimbabwe turning away food from the World Food Program (WFP) and the United States Agency for International Development (USaid) on suspicions they contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs.) Many African countries have passed laws to completely bar GM crops.

In her article, Howley laments that Zambia and Zimbabwe's turning away of GM food "...brimmed over and seeped into almost every African state." She regrets that "...cutting edge farming technology is most feared where it is most needed."

Howley is perfectly right in asserting that Africa reviews its position on GM foods. She's not alone. Robert Paarlberg, a political scientist at Wellesley University, in his new book, Starved for Science: How Biotechnology is Being Kept out of Africa, argues that Africa's development is predicated upon its readiness and willingness to embrace new technologies.

I can't but agree with Howley and Paarlberg. An open-door policy to new technologies, especially in the field of agriculture, is what Africa needs. When activists intimidate Africa, through fear, into not exploring potential benefits of GM foods, the continent suffers. They stymie a rational debate about whether GM foods have any relevance to Africa.

Africa ought to be allowed to freely debate GMOs. Other countries are moving fast to integrate biotechnology into agriculture. The latest report on the state of agricultural biotechnology in the world by the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA), for instance, shows more and more farmers are growing GM crops. It's hard to believe that the more than 21 countries that are currently growing these crops are wrong and only Africa is right that they're bad. Let Africa take an objective assessment of the potential, or lack of it, of agricultural biotechnology. This won't happen under a cloud of fear.

This brand new N series phone model of Nokia can be considered as an update from the Nokia N93. Due to a lot of complaints that emerged from initial users of the Nokia N93, the release of N93i will hopefully help to calm these complaints.

A major difference that can be easily spotted is the new design. The N93 contains the common keypads of Nokia cell phones as compared to the metallic version of N93i. This type of keypad was first seen with the RAZR phones of Motorola and it seems that Nokia has found their own way of incorporating this stylish look into their mobile phones. There's also a unique flipping style that the Nokia N93i is also capable of.

Nokia N93i Review One of the common complaints against the N93 is its weight. It seems Nokia listened to this complaints and did something about it. Unlike N93, this new version is lighter. It weighs about 160 grams, including the battery. It is a 17g less than the N93 and it is also thinner.

Another update that can be found in this phone is the sixteen million colored internal display. This is quite an increase from the 256K that N93 has to offer. This is definately a welcomed improvement. The majority of the features of N93 are still intact in the new N93i. With regard to its memory, it is almost the same with the N93. These phones both have 50MB internal memory. The difference is that the upcoming N93i comes with a bigger SD card. Compared with the 128MB card of N93, N93i comes with a whopping 1GB miniSD card.

The last change is the fuel tank. Yamaha has removed a support from the end of the tank and reduced the size by 5 millimeters which gives the comfortable feeling while you are riding it. The overall design is impressive and creates the modern look.

As more companies transfer programming and call- center jobs offshore, the topic of offshore outsourcing is raging throughout the information technology industry. I understand the frustration of workers whose jobs have been removed and of customers who fail to get their technical-support questions answered. But one of the latest studies indicates that the trend may actually be creating more jobs.

Given our global economy, the globalization of the IT industry is inevitable. Most big IT companies do much of their business overseas and naturally want to have some of their employees in those markets. Lower wages in some countries are also a huge incentive to move operations, especially since high-speed communication removes many of the barriers to dealing with U.S.-based colleagues and customers.

Interestingly, figures say that rather than reducing the number of jobs in the U.S., offshoring is lowering costs for everyone and actually creating jobs, thanks to a more efficient economy. It says that about 354,000 new jobs--both IT and non-IT--were created in 2005 thanks to offshore IT outsourcing, and by 2008 the number will reach over 589,000.

According to a study, fewer than 5 percent of U.S. IT jobs have moved offshore. But analysts predict that by 2010 25 percent will be in developing countries. They urge companies to proceed carefully, as such moves could result in the loss of future talent, intellectual assets, and organizational performance.

Of course, the creation of new jobs isn't much consolation for people who have lost their jobs. Still, moving some jobs offshore seems inevitable. There is no good alternative.

All the emphasis on offshore jobs is obscuring an important trend: Information technology jobs are changing dramatically. Though many IT jobs are still out there, you won't find the huge demand--or the huge salaries and generous options--that we saw in the dot-com era. During that period, many companies had trouble filling open positions, which led to higher wages. Now that we're back to normal, wages have retreated too.

Increased productivity also plays a key role in the new IT job scene: IT support requires fewer people than it once did. Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Mac OS X are far from perfect, but there's no question that they are more stable than Windows 95 or 98, or Mac OS 8 or 9. As a result, companies need fewer people to support them. (And if we can ever get spam and viruses under control, we'll need even fewer support personnel.)

Meanwhile, server consolidation and better desktop management have been significant trends for a long time, resulting in the need for fewer IT jobs. These trends are also reflected in job statistics. IT jobs won't disappear altogether, but we may need fewer of them.

Perhaps the biggest transformation taking place is in programming. The number of computer science majors has dropped significantly, a big concern because these are the people who would have their names on the next great innovations.

As a child, I can remember playing for hours with wooden toys. It was always a new adventure to build forts and other projects from wooden blocks. Looking back, those were some really fun times. Wooden toys allowed us to use or imaginations. Nowadays, it seems all the toys on the market are electronical. This is to keep up with the demands of our children in today's society.

When it comes to toys, technology may be hindering the development of our children's imaginations. Don't get me wrong, the graphics on the video games and laptops for children are quite amazing. However, I just don't see that many children in this age are able to enjoy playing with much of anything that isn't electronic. This is even for the older children with the iPods and MP3 Players.

The saying everything old is new again is true of the fashion industry over and over again. I would definitely love to see it apply to toys. Finding the return of wooden toys to the market for our children to experience and explore would bring a smile to my face. For smaller children, the wooden rocking horse comes to mind. They could find them to be pretty and fun. It seems parents have replaced them with electronic gadgets even for the smallest of children.

I think little girls would enjoy a wooden doll house for Barbie to live in. Then again, it wouldn't have the refrigerator with the light and small ice cubes, the doorbell, or the working lamp as the doll houses on the market now do. For boys, wooden trains could be fun. They are used to electric ones now that run around the track with the push of a button. For both boys and girls the wooden play cub with the bent wires and colorful blocks to move around would really help them develop hand and eye coordination in a much more meaningful way than playing a Gameboy.

Sadly, wooden toys are a thing of the past. As parents, we tend to indulge our children with what they want, and that continues to be the latest electronic toys in the industry. Heck, even good ole stuffed animals and dolls have electronics in them to allow them to sing, dance, walk, and cry. I think technology is good, but it has taken the fun out of the toys on the market.

Have you ever experienced a burning sensation in your chest, almost as if your heart is on fire? Have you ever felt a burning sensation in your throat followed by a foul taste in your mouth? If you have, then what you've experienced is acid reflux, commonly referred to as heartburn.

Acid reflux is a common condition that almost everyone experiences at least once during their lifetime. During digestion the stomach produces enzymes and acid to digest food. When the mixture of stomach acid and enzymes are refluxed into the oesophagus more frequently than they should, or for an extended period of time, acid reflux occurs. The most common symptom of acid reflux is a burning sensation behind the breast cavity.

A number of factors can contribute to acid reflux including:

*overweight - excess pounds put pressure on your abdomen and can push your stomach up causing acid to reflux into the oesophagus

*Overeating - Eating too much food can slow digestion.

*Posture and tight clothing - Sitting hunched over while eating or wearing constricting clothing around your waist puts pressure on your stomach

*Foods - many types of food trigger heartburn including: caffeine, fired or fatty foods, salty food, chocolate, excessive alcohol, garlic, peppermint, onion

Nevertheless, in rare cases, despite the medications an acid reflux sufferer is given to treat their symptoms, they continue to experience symptoms. Many medical researchers are beginning to believe that the ineffectiveness of the treatment may be due to the fact that those who are being treated for acid reflux are actually suffering from agents within the oesphagus that are not related to stomach acid. This condition is known as non-acid reflux.

What is non-acid reflux?

Non-acid reflux is when other potentially harmful agents (not stomach acid) are refluxed into the oesophagus such as bile. It has been discovered that non-acid reflux is defined as a reflux that has a greater pH level than 4. Unfortunately, not much is known about non-acid reflux, its symptoms, or the affects it has on the oesophagus.

It has been found that most cases of non-acid reflux occur after mealtime when the contents of the stomach are being neutralized, and the condition is more present in children than adults.

Medical researchers are still trying to figure out the exact cause of non-acid reflux. Currently new technology is being used that can accurately determine the presence of acid or non-acid in the oesophagus by measuring the Ph level.

If you believe you are suffering from acid reflux, but you find that OTC antacids are not relieving your symptoms, it is a good idea to seek the advice of your doctor. It is important for you to know what type of reflux you are experiencing so you can properly treat your condition. The reason is if you are suffering from non-acid reflux, taking an antacid will not cure your symptoms because this drug has been designed to neutralize acid - acid which would not be present in the case of non-acid reflux.

Two common elements in most fantasy novels are nature and magic. They are linked to each other and exulted as ideals in fantasy worlds. This creates much of what fantasy readers find appealing in fantasy fiction because the glorification of nature and magic is a pleasing opponent to the concrete and steel and technology that overwhelms modern life.

Characters in fantasy novels often must cross hostile wastes, brave cold mountain passes, and lose their way in dark primeval forests. In fact, readers of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" would agree that most of the story takes place outdoors. And in Christopher Paolini's "Inheritance" trilogy, the hero Eragon and his dragon Saphira spend long stretches of the story in deserts, forests, and mountains.

The emphasis on nature within the fantasy fiction genre adds to its ability to entertain with escapism. Nature is lacking from much of modern life, and especially in urban life, and imagining adventure and freedom upon the open land is a relief and a pleasure. Often while reading fantasy fiction, you can recall the security that your ancestors took from the bright crackle of a camp fire while camping upon a hostile plain. Or you can summon up that natural fear of being alone among the trees when you can feel that something is watching you.

And the partner of nature in the fantasy genre is magic. It is the force that drives the world. It governs and/or exploits societies, and magic acts as the fulcrum of the struggles in the story. Plots are often driven by rivalries between magic users, or forces of good battle with the aid of magic against evil enemies. In fantasy settings, magic is what confers power whether it is on individuals or ruling elites as opposed to technology that empowers the real world.

In fantasy fiction, the supernatural is valid and science is little used. Exploring the wonders of a world run by magic engages readers because it brings them closer to the mysteries of nature. Magic comes from the natural world, and depending on the story, sometimes the Gods, and fantasy enthusiasts are comfortable with magic as a source of power.

Magic acts as a nice foil to the technology that is omnipresent in modern life for most people. Technology is powerful and amazing and seems quite magical, but deep down everyone knows that it can be explained. That it is all wires and chips and circuits and software and that many people know how to make it and manipulate it. Factories spit out millions of awesome gadgets and televisions and computer mother boards. Technology simply lacks that special exclusivity that magic has in a fantasy novel. Not everyone in a fantasy story has magical powers, and powerful items aren't as easy to come by as a cell phone.

The foundation of nature and magic that holds up many fantasy settings appeals to fantasy readers because people often have a longing for a simpler world un-blighted by highways and telephone poles. Within Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" there are undertones in this epic that suggest a wistful regret for the loss of nature to the rise of industry. For example, the place Isengard in the trilogy is described as once being green and having "groves of fruitful trees" but the corrupt Saruman spoiled the land to build an army. "Iron wheels revolved there endlessly, and hammers thudded." Tolkien wrote.

In general, fantasy literature upholds nature as the ideal and authors give much effort to describing its beauty and awesome power. That which destroys nature is portrayed as evil and rightly so. And magic is often portrayed as superior to technology because it is akin to nature. A nice example of this is presented in Paolini's second novel "Eldest" in which he writes how the elves sing plants and trees into accommodating shapes and shelters.

Technology is not absent from fantasy literature, but it has a lesser presence in society. Fantasy settings are typically cast in pre-industrial agricultural and merchant societies. Technology is limited to trades and crafts, which are much more pleasing and benign than real world factories and nuclear power plants.

Although magic can be good because of its relationship to nature, it of course is a power that can be corrupted and twisted to evil -- as all power can. The struggle between good and evil is also an important part of the fantasy formula, but that is a whole other subject.

WHAT IS DEFRAG (DEFRAGMENTING), WHY DO I NEED TO DEFRAG MY HARDDRIVE?

Oh boy, this is a big one. OK, here we go. First thing you need to remember is to defragment your harddrive once in a while, I do this at least once a month. As files are deleted and written to the harddrive, the pieces get placed in different locations of the harddrive. So, as I delete a bunch of small files, this creates small gaps of free space all over the harddrive. Then when I finally write a big file to the harddrive, that big file will be distributed throught the harddrive and fill these little spaces of free-space. That means that if I need to access this big file again, the harddrive will need to jump to various places just to read the file. This is very inefficient, and a possible reason for a slow down. YOUR FILE IS NOW IN FRAGMENTS.

We want to DEFRAGMENT the files by re-arranging the files on the harddrive and making each individual file WHOLE again. That is the job of the Defrag tool, and will help in speeding up access to your files again.

Things to remember:

-Right click the drive you want to defrag,>Click on Properties>Click on the Tools Tab>Click on Defragmentation.

-Make sure you have disabled anything that might access the harddrive or interrupt the defrag; screensavers, sleep mode, hibernate, virus-protect, if any of these programs are running in the background, it might cause your defrag to start over and over.

-You need at least 15% of your harddrive free for a fully efficient defrag.

There is no doubt that wireless technology has evolved the way we communicate. With the popular 2.4 GHz frequency being unlicensed and inexpensive, people all around the world have been able to do things that were nothing short of impossible in the past. While this may be the case, the same also applies to hackers; wireless technologies have allowed them to not only penetrate the impenetrable, but also break into personal networks with blazing speed (as in minutes and even seconds if the wireless network's access point [AP] is completely insecure).

So what can happen if someone breaks into your network? Well for starters, it acts as a gateway for hackers to break into your system. On top of that, they can install sniffers (which allow them to steal such things as passwords and other sensitive information), adware, spyware, trojans, viruses, worms, backdoors, rootkits, and other malware as well as pursue wireless jamming attacks, encryption attacks, DoS attacks, and other various attacks. In short, given enough time, the sky is the limit on what a hacker could do when they get inside your AP.

At this point, many may say to themselves “Well, I have nothing of value on my computer, so I don't care if they hack into it”. This couldn't be any farther from the truth. If hackers compromise your computer, they'll turn it into something called a “zombie” (in other words, their slave), which will do anything the hacker wants it to. This could be anything from helping crack (or decipher) passwords, to breaking into websites, to even breaking into other computers.

Here's the kicker: if the hacker uses your computer to break into something and gets caught, guess who faces the consequences? Well, it was your computer that did the attacking, so it will be your fault, no matter if you knew about the attack or not. Whether it leads to fines or even jail time, you are stuck with a mess trying to prove that you are innocent, all while the hacker carries on with his life and pursues more targets.

Knowing about the consequences that can come from insecure AP's, there are many things you can do to prevent outsiders from trying to break in. Ideally, you'll use a “Defense in Depth” methodology, which means setting up multiple layers of security to try and deter hackers from breaking in. Now, some of these things discussed will not really add much in the way of security, but it is additional security nonetheless. Hackers love easy targets, so every layer of security you add makes it more difficult for them to break in, and thus acts as a deterrent. That being said, use the following security measures on your personal AP:

1.) Hide your SSID broadcast. Your SSID is simply the name of your AP. Without it, hackers will not know the difference between your AP and other ones in the vicinity.
2.) Change the name of your SSID. This may not sound like much but, the name can tell a hacker a lot about your AP. Using the default name probably means you are also using the default password, which can easily be found on the internet.
3.) Use MAC address filtering. A MAC address is simply an address burned into each wireless card. Using this filtering means that only the entered MAC addresses can access your AP.
4.) Enable Encryption. Use the WPA or WPA2 (if available) security mode as well as the AES algorithm. This makes it way more troublesome for hackers to eavesdrop your communications.
5.) Use both hardware and software firewalls. Chances are there is a firewall embedded right in your AP, so make sure it is enabled as well as firewalls on the networked computers.
6.) Keep learning about new wireless security threats. Technology keeps evolving, so it is in your best interest to research computer protection articles and other related news sources.
7.) Invest in computer security tools. While it is important to use layered security on your AP, it is even more important to do the same for your computer in case the hacker breaks through.

When it comes to wireless networks, deterrence can be one of the most powerful things working for you, providing you implement a Defense in Depth methodology like described above. With the large amount of weak and insecure AP's that are live today, layered security will play a vital role in whether or not outsiders try to break into your wireless network. In the end, taking the time to secure your AP now could be the difference of legal repercussions or identity theft down the road.

In the world today, fiber optics are used in many military applications, on aircraft, spacecraft, and in rugged outdoor terrains. This is due to the fact that military fiber optic connectors are much more durable and can withstand brutal environments and extreme weather changes than when the technology was introduced. In this article, we'll look at some of the basics types of connectors and discuss methods of care and cleaning of a military fiber optic connector.

There are essentially 4 different categories of connector. These categories are: the Light Connector, the multi-terminus connector, the single terminus connector, and the COTS (Commercial off the Shelf) connector. Inside these different types of connectors, only some are to be considered "military":

Types of connectors: -Mil-C-83526 (multi-terminus) -Mil-C-28876 (multi-terminus) -Mil-C-38999 (multi-terminus) -Mil-C-83522 (single-terminus)

As rugged as these connectors are, they still require precision when it comes to the care and cleaning. There are two different methods of cleaning military fiber optic cables depending on the connectors design.

Cleaning with Lint-Free Wipes and Solvents or Alcohol Pads: Saturate your dry lint-free wipe with alcohol using a pump dispenser designed for use in a cleaning military fiber optic connector. The design of the pump dispenser keeps the alcohol free of dust and debris. Prepackaged, pre-saturated alcohol pads are also available for times when dry pads and solvent are inappropriate. With the connector end face down, wipe the connector with the alcohol soaked pad until clean and then use a dry pad to wipe the connector clean.

Cleaning with Swabs and Solvents: Cleaning these connectors with swabs is especially useful for cleaning recessed connection points but can also be used to clean the entire connector. Insert the saturated swab into recessed points or apply the swab to the exposed surface of the connector and rotate the swab carefully applying different degrees of pressure. Check the connector for cleanliness using and optical microscope and repeat if necessary.

For a complete cleaning environment for your military fiber optic connectors, you will also want to use dust caps and canned air to prevent debris from collecting on the connectors while working. Though military connectors and cabling are designed to be more rugged than standard fiber optic connectors are, the times when the fiber optic connectors are open are when the fibers are most vulnerable. Taking extra precaution during cleaning and maintenance are essential to the longevity of your fiber optic network.

It has just been announced by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) that the Asian longhorned beetle (ALB) cooperative eradication program began tree removal within a 14-block residential area of Linden, N.J., to stop the spread of this destructive and invasive pest. This is a wakeup call to all eastern US growers and gardeners of the dangers facing our industry. USDA's integrated pest management system calls for infested trees and certain tree species that could host new populations of this tree-killing pest to be removed. The removal of 650 trees is taking place on both public streets and private property between Jan. 2 and March 1, weather permitting.

The boundaries of the work areas is as follows: 21st Street to the south; 13th Street to the north; Lower Road and Wood Avenue to the west; and the Conoco Phillips and the Rose Hill Cemetery properties to the east. The work takes place Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Work crews will consist of a wood chipper and truck, a crane to facilitate trunk removal and a flat bed truck for logs. Personnel from USDA's ALB cooperative eradication program are on hand to oversee the contractor's work and can answer residents' questions.

Later, in spring 2006, the ALB program's reforestation component will begin. The program will offer tree species that are not ALB hosts on a one-to-one basis--for every tree cut, a nonhost tree can be planted. Residents will have their choice of tree species from an approved list, or can opt against a replacement tree. In 2005 more than 2,100 non ALB-host trees have been planted by the ALB cooperative eradication program in Middlesex and Union counties to replace trees removed to control the pest. Of those, 385 trees were planted in the City of Linden alone.

This beetle has the potential to damage such industries as lumber, maple syrup, nursery and tourism, accumulating over $40 billion in losses. The beetle is shiny black with white spots and long antennae banded in black and white. ALBs grow and mature deep inside the heartwood of host trees during the fall and winter months and emerge as adult beetles during the spring and summer. Many people will think someone has drilled a hole in their tree. They will suspect vandals were present when in fact it is the ALB.

CD Burning - The Differences Between Track-at-once and Disc-at-once by Jason Cole

All of us who own a personal computer have burned at least a CD or two in our days. Being able to download music and create your own mix CDs has been one of my favorite features since the beginning. Software such as iTunes and Nero has made this task even easier, pretty much doing all the work for us. All you need to do is insert your CD-R into your CD burner, pop open either one of those programs, drag in your audio files, and hit the burn button. In a couple minutes your CD is ready to go. But wait a second, what about these options like burn speed, and should I choose disc-at-once or track-at-once? Well, today we'll be attempting to get to the bottom of one of these confusing options. We'll be discussing what the differences are between these two CD burn modes; track-at-once and disc-at-once, and to decide which one is the right option to choose for your project.

Track-At-Once
This is the first option that was introduced when CD duplication software was first created. With this mode, each time a track is finished burning, the laser recording the information stops. When it stops, two run-out blocks of data are written. After that, one link block and four run-in blocks are written when the next track begins to record. With track-at-once, you may burn both data and audio on the same disc. These blocks in between tracks are not a problem when data is being read, but you may hear a click on some CD players when playing back audio. This is something that may cause you problems if you are having your disc mastered and duplicated or replicated at a professional facility. In that regard, track-at-once is best suited for CDs for personal enjoyment.

Disc-At-Once
This burn mode takes all of your data, be it audio data or regular data, and burns it all to disc in one big block. No gaps are added between tracks, the laser never stops burning the data to disc. This is a newer feature, which should be an option in most modern CD burning software. One option you have with disc-at-once mode, which is kind of interesting, is that you can place allows any amount of audio data (or no data at all) to be written in the "pre-gaps" between tracks. With this option, you can place track introductions between each song. This is cool, because you can create "hidden tracks" on the CD in the pre-gap areas, that are only accessible by rewinding backwards into the pre-gap area. This is the ideal choice for CD masters that will be going to a CD duplication or replication house.

I hope that this fully explains these two different CD burning modes for you, or at least explains it enough for you to successfully create your next CD mix or master. I was going to leave out explaining burn speed for another article, but it really is simple enough to explain at the tail end of this article. Basically, your burn speed should be15-30% of the drive's maximum capacity. I.e. For a 52x burner, the optimal burn speed would be from 12-16x. It's as simple as that. Getting up each morning to get to work on time is a reality for most of us. Although it's been said that over time the internal clock within our body will wake us up at the same time each day, an alarm clock is a good back-up system.

When I was young the alarm clock in my home was my mother's voice. She'd raise the call that it was 7 am and time to get the

day started. Unfortunately as we mature, we have to turn to the world of technology to take over that job. In the world of alarm clocks there are so many different designs, everything from the standard round face bells to the alarm clock phone system.

I choose the latter for several reasons all of which boil down fundamentally to convenience. I don't have a great deal of space in my bedroom so an alarm clock phone serves a dual purpose without doubling the physical space it needs. The alarm clock phone also has a radio in it so I can set the alarm to either a tone or the music of my choice. I tend to go with the tone because being awakened to blaring music can be a bit too startling.

I've heard complaints about the quality of the phone in some systems but I've never had a problem. The alarm phone clock I

recently purchased came with a cordless telephone. This is great as I can lie in bed reading in the evening and if a call comes through I can answer it on the alarm phone clock and then get up and wander around if need be. The audio quality is comparable to the other phones I've got in the house so it's not an issue I personally need to be worried about.

Finding one wasn't difficult either. There were several local electronic stores that had a few different models of an alarm clock phone system to choose from. I wrote down the prices and specifications of each one and then did some research online. I actually found the same alarm clock phone that was available locally for about 20% less online. Even with shipping charges

added in the alarm clock phone online was less expensive. The website offered expedited shipping so I had it in my home within two days.

It was very simple to set up. It did need to be charged before I could use the telephone to make or receive calls, but it took a couple of seconds to set the clock and determine how the alarm feature worked. It's a great little machine and I'd honestly recommend an alarm clock phone to anyone.
